What Lorem Ipsum is
Lorem Ipsum is dummy text used to fill space in a layout when the real copy isn't ready. It's been the default placeholder of the design world since at least the 1500s, when typesetters would scramble passages of Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum ("On the Ends of Goods and Evils") to demonstrate fonts and page layouts. The opening words "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" are themselves corrupted Latin from that text.
The point of Lorem Ipsum — the reason designers reach for it instead of "asdf asdf" or song lyrics — is that it looks like real prose. The letter frequencies, word lengths, and overall texture mimic readable English-ish text, so a layout filled with it gives a true sense of how a page will feel once it's populated. Real copy reads as content; Lorem Ipsum reads as shape.
When to use it
- Wireframes and mockups. You're laying out a page and don't yet know what the headline will say. Real copy at this stage is a distraction — people read it and respond to the words instead of the layout.
- Component libraries. Storybook entries, design system documentation, anywhere you need to show "what does this card look like with three lines of text?"
- Stress-testing layouts. Generate a paragraph that's much longer than expected to see how the layout handles overflow, line wrapping, and edge cases.
- Empty-state placeholders. The shape of a screen before its data has loaded.
When not to use it
Once a design moves past wireframe stage, real or near-real copy beats Lorem Ipsum every time. The real text has different lengths, different rhythms, and different difficulties than the Latin filler — a button label that fits "Lorem" might not fit "Save and continue to checkout." Many design problems only surface once real content is in place.
Don't ship Lorem Ipsum. Yes, this happens. A surprising number of websites have been launched with placeholder text still embedded in the footer, on a less-trafficked page, or in an email template. Search for "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" on Google and you'll find live examples in production right now.
Variations
The classic version starts with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit." There are also themed alternatives — "Bacon Ipsum" (meat-related words), "Hipster Ipsum" (artisanal vocabulary), "Cupcake Ipsum" (desserts) — that have their fans. They're fine for personal projects but tend to be more distracting than the original Latin precisely because the words are real and your brain wants to read them.
Size guidance
A few common amounts:
- One short paragraph: 50–80 words. Good for card descriptions, alert messages.
- One medium paragraph: 150–200 words. About the length of a blog post intro.
- An article body: 500–1000 words across 4–6 paragraphs.
- A heading or label: 3–6 words.
- A long-form layout test: 2000+ words, to see how page navigation and reading-progress indicators behave.
